Washington Mardi Gras and Keeping Safe

This week kicks off the Washington Mardi Gras where over 2000 congressmen and businessmen get together to focus on building economic development for Louisiana and the nation as a whole. CGI Protects, in conjunction with the Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, is meeting with top industry and government decision makers to share their CGI Fusion solution for protecting assets and personnel with a higher security, accountability, and accessibility.

As we approach Mardi Gras season, it reminds us we need to be cognizant of our surroundings at all times. Even in the best of locations there is potential for security risks. Securing your valuables including your wallet and credit cards is always a good idea. While traveling you may want to separate out your credit cards and keep one or more in separate places in the event your wallet or purse is lost or stolen. It is also a good idea to keep a photocopy of your passport and license as proof of identity.

Be aware of your surroundings – notice if a person appears to be a threat. Maybe they have had too much to drink, or are disoriented for other reason. CGI Protects have installed surveillance cameras mounted throughout high traffic areas in New Orleans. Be aware of where these are located and you can even point them out as a precaution.

Travel with others, and don’t make you self a target. A person who is aware is rarely a target. Pepper spray is legal in New Orleans and a easy way to defend yourself. If you do find yourself walking alone, don’t hug the buildings. Often there are undesirable characters hiding in doorways for unsuspecting travelers.

Safety Tips for the Winter

As the weather gets cooler and it gets darker earlier there are some very wise safety strategies that can be employed to ensure your businesses and loved ones are safe.

Change the batteries in your Fire Alarms and Carbon Monoxide detectors
As daylight savings time comes twice a year- this is the perfect habit to develop for safe house and business keeping. Just remember: when you change your clocks, change your batteries.

Prepare a disaster supply kit
Another great thing to do twice yearly: As the hours jump back and forth make sure your employees and family are protected from unforeseen tragedies. If you’ve already created an emergency kit, now is a great time to double check all the supplies in it to make sure nothing’s forgotten or expired. Great things to remember: water, food, toothbrushes, flashlights, batteries (test & replace them if necessary), and blankets.

Don’t forget a “winter emergency kit” for your car!
A cold winter is coming. Make sure you’re prepared for any circumstance by packing the essentials along with some cold weather clothes just in case.

Stay safe when you turn your heaters on
Make sure all flammable materials are a safe distance from electric and hot water heaters.

Clean or change your furnace filter
It’s always wise and even recommended that you have your heating system inspected or serviced once yearly to ensure safety, longer life and better performance.

Discard all expired meds
Some common, over the counter medications can cause serious problems due to change through aging. May sure to check your medicine cabinet for any expired meds and keep ALL medication safely stored from children and household pets.

Slow! Children at play!
As it gets darker earlier make sure you’re keeping an eye out for the neighborhood kids walking home or playing the streets.
Parents: suggest that your child wears lighter/ more reflective clothing to increase visibility and ensure safety.
